Fruit cake has a bad reputation.  I don’t really know why, other than there might have been some bad ones baked and given out as gifts during the holiday season.  Of course, as I was growing up, anything handmade and given as a present was looked down upon.  It was something not good as something that was purchased.

The epitome of looking the gift horse in the mouth and finding cavities.

I happen to like fruit cake.  Or I should say that I like the fruit cake that was made by my one Aunt.  She was my fathers sister…and she made awesome fruit cake.  I think that what made it amazing was the fact that she soaked not only every ingredient in alcohol, but she also drank as much as she put into the recipe.  I miss her.

I do remember that my Aunt’s fruit cake weighed in just short of a metric ton.  It was a heavy s.o.b.  fruitcake8

But it tasted amazing.  And a good buzz was had by all.  I was the only one in the family that liked it, though.  Of course, my family is just a tad on the strange side.  I managed to get all the logical, and reasonable genetics.

At least that is my story, and I am sticking with it so deal….

the past 34 years I have worked in retail and have sold fruit cake, or tried to sell fruit cake in all shapes and sizes to a public that continues to cast a jaundiced eye on it.  And try as I may, I have had a difficult time convincing people to just give it a try.  I have heard that it tastes like concrete….

That it is possessed by demons…

I have been told that people would be ostracized by their families if they brought fruit cake to a family gathering…

And I just don’t get it.  I mean I literally no longer get fruit cake.  My Aunt has reached the age where she no longer cooks such delicacies for the family.  And no one has taken up her standard…..And that makes me sad, just a little bit.
