Have you heard of the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act yet?
I was surprised to hear about it from my son this morning. He is discussing it in one of his classes at UofM. The proposal is being sponsered by Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care (MCCC), and is heading for the november ballot.
The proposal would
* Allow terminally and seriously ill patients who find relief from marijuana to use it with their doctors’ approval.
* Protect these seriously ill patients from arrest and prosecution for the simple act of taking their doctor-recommended medicine.
* Permit qualifying patients or their caregivers to cultivate their own marijuana for their medical use, with limits on the amount they could possess.
* Create registry identification cards, so that law enforcement officials could easily tell who was a registered patient, and establish penalties for false statements and fraudulent ID cards.
* Allow patients and their caregivers who are arrested to discuss their medical use in court.
* Continuing certain restrictions on the medical use of marijuana, including prohibitions on public use of marijuana and driving under the influence of marijuana.
Here is hoping that it passes.
namaste.

[...] in Michigans Proposal 1 that would legalize medical marijuana. I have been getting a few hits on what I wrote a couple of days ago on [...]

I agree, I hope it passes. It seems that the no campaign for proposals 1 and 2 are just ridiculous. There is no reason we should not allow medical marijuana to pass. Doctors prescribe much more dangerous drugs then marijuana. If it will ease the pain of sick people who is to say that it wrong.

I hope this passes! Michigan would be such an awesome and hopefully libertarian state by telling government to butt the hell out of people’s private lives.

I for one hope that it passes for i have been taking perscription medication since i was in elementry school. Ritalin/Adderal whatever you may call it an it controls my ADHD perfect to the proverbial “T” but the biggest side effect is a complete loss of appitite. I need my Adderal to focus in school an on the job. However, consuming food becomes far lower on the totem pole of daily life with medical marijuana i would be enabled to be a productive person of society instead of being a productive/fasting person of society. It would also alliviate my headaches an back spasms from which i received in a car accedent i was in over a year ago. In conclusion thank you for your attention an care in this matter.
GO OUT AN VOTE, ITS OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHT AS AMERICANS

Yeah right, who is this really going to benefit? Those who want to get high anyway who can’t afford to get it from the streets, but who will use the doctor to get it. Michigan is already screwed up. So why not legalize drinking? How about crack cocaine? Of course, I am sure that it to can help remedy/cure something. Michigan would not be going through these changes if they would come away from the wickedness and abide by Gods laws, everyone would would benefit. Start reading the Bible and find out what God has said. Start at Proverbs. Trust me, if people (even I) continue to live in sin and doing what the heck we want to do, it will cost!!. Educated and uneducated, look around, everything that is in the Bible is coming to past, and it doesn’t take a ROCKET scientist to figure that out.
Medical Marijuana…..I don’t think so!!!!!
October 23rd, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I for one will be voting against it. What a ridiculous proposal. All it will do is open the doors for drug addicts who have no medical use for marijuana (other than to “medicate” themselves) to get it “legally” under to guise of “medical use”. Mark my words, if this proposal passes, 90% of the people receiving “medical marijuana” would just be dope heads who paid off a unscrupulous doctor to get a prescription. Don’t think it’ll happen? It already is with legal prescription drugs. I once knew a girl who got her “prescription drugs” by going to a doctor she knew that only asked her, “What do you want” and after paying him $100 she’d walk out with a book of prescriptions for what ever she wanted.

I think that this proposal would be great.Medicinal or not. Marijuana is not addictive like the man made painkillers that are happily prescribed by our (legal drug dealers)doctors.I’m sure that everyone knows of someone who died or was hooked on Vicodin,Percocet, etc.Even Cindy McCain.I’m sure that she didn’t ask for her addiction.Do you ever see tragic stories about someone on marijuana? No! Only the one’s that are legal like alcohol and the drug in cough medicine to make Meth.Which one is worst? Even cigarettes are legal and killing more non-smokers.If marijuana would be legal like it is in the Netherlands crimes would drop dramatically. It’s proven in their system along with legal prostitution. If it’s in your face every day most people especially the young one’s wouldn’t think that they have to rebel.THINK GREEN!!!!
October 24th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
I too think this one should pass. I work with people who have these conditions daily!!
On a side note: Maybe it would bring jobs to Michigan. All of our autoworkers could get into pot farming!! ;)

In response to Kaye..
You seem so narrow minded when it comes to this. Cannabis reduces pain and nausea, and is not a addictive drug nor a gateway drug. You have listened and have been force fed a line of BS by the goverment telling you this is a bad drug. If this law passes it would help the terminally ill so much, there are so many man made drugs that are addictive and cause very bad side effects, yet they are legal and actually cause more damage than good and all you can do to think about it is how it will affect you, if someone in your family had cancer and was sufforing would you not want them to have anything to reduce and release their pain? Or would you let them suffor and say im sorry the goverment wont make any money on this drug so its illegal and you cant have it. Think about others and not yourselves.
Vote Yes on Proposal 1
October 28th, 2008 at 5:39 pm
I hope this proposal gets passed. I’d rather have people on medicinal marijuana than on oxycotin, which is a very dangerous drug if taken in excess or if used improperly. With marijuana, you cannot overdose, making it, in my opinion, the most preferred drug to relieve pain.
Unfortunately the government wont legalize it because then it would prove that they were wrong about cannabis, in that is a dangerous drug, which is absolutely not the case.
I would rather use a drug that was made by God himself then use man made drugs, which are proven to be dangerous, and sometimes fatal, however, I would go to prison if I used cannabis…oh well
Hope this gets passed…

What about the people who suffer from mental illness, I know for sure that it helps with depression and anxeity,
October 29th, 2008 at 11:32 am
I myself am 37 already had a hysterectomy I have lived with collitis since I have been 14 and I am on anti depressents that make me forget everything, I cant sleep I have know appatite and with marijuana being legal would make things better in my case I would probably be able to eat and sleep

Dear Friends,
I did not use marijuana this past year, I probably would have if it were legal. Well, maybe not as it took so long for me to quit smoking cigarettes, I would be afraid I would pick that habit up again.
As I do not have prescription insurance, the nausea medicine that I was able to afford (Phenergan) had very little effect. This prescription made me very tired and weak, but the nausea was still there. My doctor was able to give me a free (2 pills) sample prescription of EMEND. Unfortunately, they did nothing for me. Although, if they did work for me, I would not be able to afford them (Walgreen’s price as of today is 3 pills for $360.00, yes, 3 pills for $360.00). Take one a day without insurance, that right there will make you nauseous.
There are people that we know and love with some major health problems, they should be able to try whatever it takes to help them through their difficult times. If marijuana were a drug made in a laboratory, it would have been made legal years ago and sold by our pharmacists to those able to afford it.
Vote yes on Proposal 1.
Love

Medical Cannibus’s many underestimated non-smokable, and non-intoxicating uses have been kept from the general free American masses by the large drug companys, and the genius’s on Wallstreet. CBD-A’s and CBD-D’s, are a known preventative for cancer. You may obtain the relief by the consumption of fresh, non-pshyco-active fan leaves. Thats a small example of why the corporations, Wallstreet bosses, and corrupt polititions don’t wan’t free medical enterprises. Their profits drop, as local free American economy booms. Control at a medical, or “life or death” state is how they want us to stay, so they may continue the system thats in place. Not to mention if prop 1 is passed, BILLIONS of dollars will be centralized in Michigans economy, due to Candian, and Mexican drug cartels’ inability to press dangerous products, broaght on by crime and violence in the state of Michigan. Over all, prop. 1 will save patients money, while localizing billions of dollars in lost profits and interest.

For those who will be voting against this proposal, you may feel differently if one day you or a loved one is faced with cancer or something else that leaves them in pain and not able to eat. As some other people have mentioned, doctors prescribe FAR WORSE, and I mean FAR FAR FAR worse drugs to people for lesser problems. Fentanyl? Oxycontin? It is heorin in pill form, yet it is given out like candy by doctors. Of course there will be people who take advantage of this, just as they do vicodine and everything else on the market. But people do not overdose from marijuana, it does not eat holes in your stomach. It is the lesser evil if you ask me when compared to the other options on the market. The government has told you for so many years about the evils of marijuana, you are brainwashed to believe so. It will need regulations just as anything else, but to deny sick people something that works so well to help them is ridiculous. It is all politics.

Bottom line, users and abusers will use and abuse whether it’s legalized or not! So shouldn’t those in need for medical purposes be able to get the help they need and not be prosecuted for it? A good friend of my mother’s has been an addict of prescription drugs for years. She’s been in many accidents while driving under “their” influence. She considers herself a devout Christian as well. This is acceptable? But an elderly woman that is suffering from the ravages of chemo therapy, and would otherwise have no clue how to obtain marijuana to ease the nausea and be able to take in invaluable nutrition to maintain strength to fight the desease comsuming her body, is wrong???? Will there be those that find away around the system?? You bet, just like every other law, there’s always abusers. But it does not outway the benefits to those it will help. Driving under the influence will still be held accountable whether prescribed or not. Irresponsible use of marijuana is not better or worse than the irresponsible use of prescription drugs or alcohol. But it could be a significant difference for someone in need. Before you get on a moral high horse really think about it and put yourself in that persons place. Compassion is all but dead if you can not understand this issue.

PROP 1 PASSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
November 5th, 2008 at 12:29 am
The responses I have read is a great example of under-educated voters taking the word of others and not really looking into the studies and research conducted on the long term effects of cannabis use.
I was diagnosed with MS several years ago and under these guidelines I would be included as a potential recipient for medicinal marijuana. However, as a substance abuse therapist having specific knowledge of the effects of MJ use on the body and the immune system I could NOT endorse this proposal. The simple thought of this being passed is nauseating, forget the chemotherapy. And to the people who have indicated that MJ is not addictive and is not a “gateway drug” with addictive properties is naive to believe this and should not promote it use. I recommend seeking education at your local addictions center before voting on a topic such as this. Educate yourselves people.

Marijuana is impossible to overdose on. You would fall asleep or get hungry long before you got you harmful levels of THC. I wouldn’t say that ‘MJ’ is addictive, either. It definitely can be habit forming, but all it takes to keep in check is a little discipline.
It just happens that people inclined to try illegal things don’t often have much discipline.
I think the dangers of marijuana are blown way out of proportion, as are the effects of this proposal. There will be no ‘pot shops’ because this proposal only PROTECTS PRESCRIBED, SERIOUSLY ILL PATIENTS AND THEIR DOCTORS FROM PROSECUTION AND DOCTORS ARE ONLY ALLOWED TO PRESCRIBE FIVE PATIENTS EACH.
So, if you can find a doctor who hasn’t already used up his five, then convince him you have HIV or AIDS or Crohn’s, then you might be able to get his prescription, at which point you’ll have to get a special ID card. Then you or your caregiver have to GROW it. Because it’s still illegal to buy or sell it.
I’ll admit it. I smoke recreationally from time to time. How do I expect this Proposal to effect me? Not in the slightest.
I approve of it on the level that if your doctor tells you something might help, it shouldn’t be against the law for you to follow his advice.
But Marijuana is still VERY illegal. Far more illegal than it should be. There’s no way that is should be classified with heroine or cocaine. (Both man-made)
First of all, it’s a PLANT. It grows that way. All on it’s own. Even in the wild, if you let it. You don’t have to do ANYTHING to it. You don’t even have to smoke it. You can eat it. You can make tea.
Marijuana is illegal BECAUSE it’s a plant. Pfizer can’t hold a monopoly on it, and the government can’t tax it, because anybody can grow it. So they make it as illegal as possible, so that anybody they catch with it can be fined, arrested, thrown in jail, instituitionalized, and then handed a bill at the end of it all, payable to the government. Just another way that big corporations and the government bust into our lives and empty our wallets.
Michigan as a state has MORE to gain from complete legalization than anything else.
Think of the tourism!

There will be people who abuse medical marijuana, but the drugs right now, like oxycotton, cocaine, methemfetamine, aderol, and other pills, people abuse these hard drugs, they can overdose and die. If someone was to get medical marijuana they could abuse it, just like some people do everything, the most it can do is give them a serious case of the munchies, which will help them eat and stay healthy. Lets compare something thats legal, like ALCOHOL. Yeah, sure it will take some pain away, but can also impair you and cause a serious injury. Smoking marijuana just relaxes and gives an appetite, it may slow down a bit but how many alcohol related car crashes have their been compared to people who smoked a couple doobs and drove.

MS Patient shouldn’t talk this person obviously is just a retard who has never done it himself. I know plenty of people who smoke it and they dont use other drugs or even smoke cigarettes, they use it to chill out. MS patient is against it because he or she would rather have a harder drug:)
