The things in my head go 'round and 'round

This is my life. You can't have it.

Dodd Genealogy

I have been researching my family, on my Fathers side, for a number of years. And I have to admit, that most of what I have learned I learned came from two books written on our family.

Yeah, I didn’t get too far on my own. That being said, I am very interested in finding out more about my ancestors who came from England. Essex, England to be exact. And if you want to get even more specific Birdbrook Parrish, Essex, England.

Thank you very much. 1589. That was the year that my ancestor was born. I reached out to the Parrish th other day, and was informed that unfortunately the records only went back to 1633.

Unfortunately. 1633. Wrap your head around that number. Wrap your head around knowing that one of your ancestors, that you actually know about, was born in 1589.

I am completely amazed by those numbers.

Just though that you would like to know all of this.

Home is where the heart is

Went to see Riverdance at the Hershey Theatre on Saturday. The dancing? Ummm, not so much. The music, so very worth it. The drummer had to be the hardest working man in music today. He never stopped beating on something.

Got me thinking about the way we, as the children of immigrants, are always thinking of home.

Ok. So I am always the one thinking about home, but still. Anyway, being the son of immigrants from England, specifically Essex, England I have reached out to a genealogy group in the UK. Yeah, I am a geek with way too much time on my hands today.

more as I find it out.

First it was Chester Cheetah, now it is Quiznos Oven

I have talked about Chester Cheetah many times, discussing his descent to the dark side.

Now we have the Quiznos Oven talking in their latest commercial. In that smooth, dark voice. The one where someone is lured to mayhem.

You heard it hear first. Quiznos is in league with Chester Cheetah.

I really want a new cell phone

I was looking at a new Blackberry cell phone yesterday. I want that phone. One of my associates bought it last week, and I saw him playing with it. I want that phone. It is way cool. Verizon cell phones have some really cool phones out there right now. Including the Blackberry. And The Princess is all about getting one also. Verizon is running a special now where if you buy one Blackberry Storm you can get another one free. I am all about free. Though I don’t know if I can handle the cost of browsing along with the unlimited texting that I had to buy for The Princess so that I wouldn’t have a $500 cell bill.

I think that I might need to get a second job, because I really want that phone.

Existing in a society of sychophants

I like the word. Sychophants. It begins with the sound of the word “psycho”. And that pretty much explains it all.

March in the business world brings its own version of “March Madness” in that most all companies do their performance appraisals in March.

Yippee. For managers, you have to write up the appraisals, get the requisite approvals, and cover the review. And if you have any soul whatsoever, you have been keeping notes on the performance of your reports for the entire year so that the review you write isn’t a bunch of crap that you half-way remember in between watching reruns of “The Daily Show”.

And I work with a bunch of sychophants. Suck ups of the highest order. It turns my stomach.

And you want to know what else is pissing me off? Women bloggers. Yeah, I went down that road and I am looking to buy property. Get over it. When women talk about themselves, their bodies, their thoughts it is cool and edgy. If I talk about a woman I am creepy, or disgusting. And yet I read womens blogs where they talk about their breasts, and their vaginas in the most graphic terms, and THEY ARE READ MY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE. Both men and women. But just you wait, because if I started writing about my penis you could hear the stampede of browsers being closed all the way to Canada.

Though I do talk a bit about pooping, because pooping is pretty cool.

I digress. Continuing with the outrage.

Ah crap. I am done with the outrage. I just canm’t keep a good outrage rant going like I used to. I think I am going to go take a nap.

Or maybe poop.

Lena, a new singer/songwriter

I love new talent. I love listening to good, local singer/songwriters. And I would like to introduce you to Lena.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Lena has been singing for as long as she can remember. At age 7, she sang the national anthem in front of a huge crowd and got rave reviews. She went on to record very well received covers of popular hits and recently began writing her own music. Recently, she released her first original composition, “Framed”, which she wrote in collaboration with Kosta Lois, a veteran Hollywood music composer and producer. The song can be heard on Lena’s myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/lenasofficialpage

Video Poker in Pennsylvania

There are a whole bunch of folks here in Pa that do not want the Gov to legalize video poker. And each one has its own agenda.

There are the casino operators who are projecting a loss of business if the Legislature makes it legal for the thousands of bars and restaurants who own liquor licenses to put up to 5 video poker machines in their businesses. Of course, as part of the casinos $50 million license fee, there is a clause that could help them get that fee back if the state puts them into a position to lose money. Which would put a hurting on the Commonwealth to make money off of video poker, unless they give the casinos something else in return. Like table games, but that is a story for another day.

Then there are the folks who worry about the overall cost of video poker to the state. They claim that video poker puts gambling in the face of folks who might not be able to afford it. Who might not be able to gamble responsibly. The cost here is of the human kind. Families broken up, homes lost, jobs lost, people destroyed. The groups that tout this litany talk about the increased crime, the increased cost of police protection, social service cost, etc. And this can be a huge cost, but don’t we already deal with this cost?

In 2007 Pennsylvania had 1491 deaths due to drunk driving. The same year there were over 15,000 DUI arrests. Alcohol, it can be argued, and its effect on people can result in the same drain on the family, and on the state. And yet we embrace alcohol. We love alcohol.

Hmm. Am I missing something here?

Video Poker and Pennsylvania

Gambling. Alcohol. Tax relief. Tuition relief.

Those subjects keep raising their heads here in the Commonwealth.

Governor Rendell is proposing the legalization of video poker in all establishments that currently have liquor licenses in Pennsylvania. He is saying that the video poker machines are already here, why not make some money off of them?

Sounds reasonable.

But then there is the problem of mixing alcohol and gambling. We ran into the same situation a couple of years ago when he ok’d the casino’s to serve free alcohol to their patrons. That raised a shit storm of protest that quickly went away. Regardless, there is a concern with folks drinking and having the capability to flush their savings down the rabbit hole of instant winnings.

And lets make this clear. I like to play slot machines. I think that they are very entertaining. But I do know what I have to spend, and what I don’t have to spend. Not everyone has the capability to make those distinctions. And being drunk pretty much takes away your inhibitions, now doesn’t it?

So which side are you on?

Do you see the good that can come from the Commonwealth looking for ways to grab some of the cash that is already being spent out there? Or are you concerned with folks who don’t know when to say when?

With those questions in mind, keep it in the back of your head the numbers of folks out there driving around on suspended licenses because of drinking and driving.

Hmmm…..

Man Cave

I have heard this term for years, and never really thought much about it. We have friends who have “Family Rooms”, and we have friends who have “Sports Rooms”, but I don’t know if any of our friends have a “Man Cave”.

So I started looking around. Of course. And came across The Official Man Cave Site. And the wonders of having a place to do what you want as a guy unfold around you as you look at the pictures and read the articles. And of course I don’t have that kind of space to do what all you see when you look at the pics. I have the space of a small closet. Surrounded by mountains of stuff left over from moving here, there and everywhere before we moved into this house.

But it has gotten me thinking once again about a kegorator. You know, a refrigerator that has been converted into a keg dispenser. And I am stoked. Going to be on the look out for a cheap refrig that I can convert, because the conversion is the easy part. Find the frig, and the money to buy it are always where the plans go south.

Don’t you know.

You spin me round, like a record right round

It is always interesting to see how people end up on this page, and one of the main ones is a search from a song’s lyrics.

Flor-rida has a sampled tune out there that is called “You make my head spin”. I would post it, but youtube has taken it off. The song he sampled from was by a group called Dead or Alive. They recorded this song in the 80’s:

Life is weird sometimes, now isn’t it?
