Life around our household has been interesting to say the least. I managed to conract an infection in my foot making it impossible to put on a shoe and be mobile. And seeing as

my job requires me to be a ble to walk around the store so that I know what is going on, not being able to walk was a hinderance so I spent the week between Christmas and New Years with my foot elevated. sounds a lot more fun than it actually was. Believe me. Because being home at that time meant that I was home with MLW and The Princess. That never ends well. Too much time together and we start to get on one anothers nerves. Really bad. And I am the one who starts it because I am not as nice as MLW is.

That being said, I also spent some time learning how to make soy candles, something that I had done years ago but had gotten away from. Actually, I didn’t make soy candles we made parrafin candles and had a great time with it, but this time around I am planning on making some soy candles. I also made another batch of my famed Out Cider hard cider for some friends. Said friends keep hounding me as to when this batch of cider is going to be ready for consumption, and if they keep it up it will never be ready for them. I unfortunately have not brewed the latest batch of Imperial Red Ale because, hello! Have you noticed how freaking cold it has been outside? I am not a cold loving kind of guy. And even though I do enjoy brewing some good beer, standing outside in the cold during the process is not my cup of tea. Sorry. I am not a cold lover.

This week we have the Pennsylvania Farm Show in town. This event happens every year in January as an excuse for all of us who have gained 50 lbs over the holidays to pack on just a couple more. something to make feel that much worse about ourselves before we get into the rest of the winter. The best part of the Farm Show is the food. Potato donuts, french fries, baked potatoes with real melted butter on top. Deep fried vegetables fried cheese, fried mushrooms, fried everything. They have really good milk shakes, and honey ice cream, and warm apple dumplings with ice cream, and oh my god pretty much anything else you might want to eat. Really good fried tilapia, pulled pork sandwiches, beef BBQ, meatball sandwiches, blooming onions, onion rings. I am salivating just thinking about all of that really good fried food that is waiting to clog up my arteries somemore. If you have never been to the Farm Show and are going to be around the Harrisburg area this week you have got to stop by and check it out.

And don’t forget to look at that animals, cause there are about a billion 4-H kids around who have been raising all of the cows, and horses, and chickens, and such who like to show their animals offf. We can’t forget about the kids. It wouldn’t be right if we did. But once you have gotten that out of the way you can head for the food court. I will see you there.

So, Halloween has come and gone. Most of the candy is out of the house. The decorations have been taken down, and put away. Now we get ready for the end of year holiday onslaught.

More decorations to dig out and put up. The time changed back an hour. Which really messes me up this time of year. I don’t have much trouble in the springing forward part, but this falling back really takes its toll. I think because of all the darkness. You get up in the dark, go to work in the dark, and then come home in the dark. Dark, dark, dark.

Growing up, holidays took on a different feel. I grew up in a good sized family. 2 Aunts, and 2 Uncles. A smattering of cousins tossed in for good measure. And that was just on my Dad’s side. My Mom had 10 Brothers and Sisters, but we didn’t see them as much as they lived on the Detroit side of Michigan. And we can’t remember my Grandparents. Earl and Vida lived on a farm outside of the small town I grew up in. Not a huge farm, but to me it was the greatest place there was. And holiday dinners with my Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, and cousins were wonderful. Great food, people who loved you, and a warm house. Gathered around the TV, or playing games in the dining room. Taking naps on the floor listening to the adults talk. Voices of people who loved one another.

Those were good times.

Thursday, June 19th. Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Food. Lots of it.

People. Lots of them.

Heat. Learn to sweat copiously, and like it.

Rain. Well, I don’t know about this one yet, but we have had some pretty violent downpours during Jubilee Day in the past.

I will be the good looking, bald guy, taking pictures. And most likely eating a sausage and pepper sandwich. And just maybe tossing back a couple of cold ones at the G-man. If I can find a spot to stand.

Come up and say “Hi”. And I will take your picture, and make you famous.

You have to be there. It is the largest one day freakfest…I mean the largest one day street fair on the east coast. It is a day full of knocking into people that you know, and more that you don’t know. It is this huge craftshow/greasyfood/howfewclothescanIwearandstillgetawaywithit/signupforverizon
tmobileattpatriotnews/areyouregisteredtovote/contributetoourcause/havesomefries/anddon’t
forgetthefreshsqueezedlemonade/everyoneNEEDStheirowncornshockbroom/youHAVEtoget
somekettlecorn extravaganza. You have to be there.

Just don’t park in my space. And don’t move my lawn chairs that I put out to save my parking space. ‘Cause even though it is a public street, I will have your car towed. You understand this if you come from Harrisburg.

Remember. The third thursday of every June.

Namaste.

So here we are the day after all of the Second Christmas madness.

How are you? I am fine, though with all of the sugar that I have eaten over the past few days my digestive system is just a tad off. I know that you are happy that you asked. I just had to share.

With that being said, thought I would let everyone in on how the weight loss is going right now. I have a ways to go. Just like a lot of us out there. But……

lalalalalalalalala

Had the day off today and went and picked up the laptop. It was having issues that needed resolved, and so I had them resolved and now I am fully mobile again. Of course in the mean time I also picked up another tower that will end up in The Princess’ room. For all of her computing joy.

And that pretty much gets you up to speed. Glad we could talk.

L8R.

Though I don’t play the drums. Not even when we play “Rock Band” on the Wii. The drums are not for me. But I do identify with Animal.

For those of you not familiar to Pennsylvania, in January we have a event called The Pennsylvania Farm Show. The Farm Show is considered to be the largest agricultural event held in the United States. It has been held every January since 1917.

The 2009 Pennsylvania Farm Show will run from January 10th through the 17th. Keeping Pennsylvania Growing is this years theme.

Ok. That is nice. But what about the important part? The food court. Yeah, I am all about the food court. Have to hit:

PA Cooperative Potato Growers, Inc. – This is the oldest Potato Cooperative in the United States, chartered in 1922. The money raised during Farm Show week helps to support the marketing and promotion of PA potatoes. Monies are also used to pay dues for PA growers to belong to National Potato organizations; fund research projects, and promotional opportunities for PA growers.

Products for Sale: baked potatoes, fresh cut French fries, potato donuts, potatoes and baked sweet potatoes.

Love them fries.

Then on to:

PA Dairymen’s Association – This organization is a service organization that provides scholarships, youth programs, and agricultural education programs across the Commonwealth. They also maintain the milk house facilities located in the Farm Show Complex. The Dairymen rely on the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show to fund their activities.

Products for Sale: milkshakes, milk/chocolate milk, ice cream sundaes, deep fried mozzarella cubes with marinara sauce and ice cream cones

Do yourself a favor, get the vanilla shake. It is wonderful.

Next:

PA Mushroom Growers Cooperative – This organization gives its proceeds to the American Mushroom Institute, which conducts research and supports mushroom growers throughout the United States.

Products for Sale: deep-fried breaded mushrooms, packaged fresh mushrooms and portabellos, mushroom soup, grilled portabellas, grilled portabella sandwich, mushroom salad and schroomies

My family hates mushrooms. They are closet communists. Deep fried ‘srooms are wonderful, the grilled portabella is to die for.

Moving on, ok, waddling on:

Penn Ag Industries Assoc./Penn Ag Poultry Council & Penn Ag Aquaculture Council. -

Products for Sale: fish sandwich, trout chowder and tortilla crusted tilapia, fresh bagels w/or w/o cream cheese, cinnamon sticky bun, shoofly pie by the slice or whole pies, whoopie pies with white or peanut butter icing, large cookies and cinnamon bun

The fish sandwiches here are absolutely delicious. And the tortilla crusted tilapia is something that I am going to have to save room for.

Can someone get me a gurney? Keep moving:

State Horticultural Association – the SHAP booth at the Farm Show is committed to raising money for the apple and fruit tree industry. One of the major benefactors of our booth is the fruit research lab in Biglerville. The center is committed to development of new knowledge and education necessary to lead and support the successful transition of the industry to new production systems and markets. The fruit centers infrastructure transformation through orchard replanting into new production systems, equipment technology development and laboratory renovations will continue to allow our field to grow and address the changes that need to be made for the future fruit farmers to thrive in Pennsylvania.

Products for Sale: apple cider, fresh apples, apple dumplings with ice cream, apple butter, cider floats, caramel apples on a stick, dried apple snacks, and apple or peach sundaes.

Apple dumplings. With ice cream. Oh. My. God.

I am done. But one last stop, back to pick up a dozen potato donuts. Get some frosted, and some plain. You won’t be sorry.

Dieting starts after the Farm Show in Central Pennsylvania. See you at the gym on the 18th.

Namaste.

MLW and The Princess were just out in the kitchen making cookies. The sound of them talking is balm to my soul. Just talking about nothing in particular. That sound is the absolute sound of home.

It takes me back to my home as I was growing up. The sound of people who love one another talking in the kitchen while making meals, or cookies, whatever. Talking about life, sharing with one another.

One of the reasons given by folks who have been asked as to how they are going to vote on Michigans Proposal 1 has been that if marijuana is approved for medical use, it will be abused. Folks will find a way to get hold of it and get high.

I don’t see a down side to that. I found this link when I was looking for facts on the war on drugs. I found it interesting.

I can’t think of the down side to having folks being able to fire one up. Maybe fewer drunks on the road. Obesity might go up from ice cream and dorito consumption.

Just thought that I would toss that out there.

I was watching a documentary the other morning “King Corn” is what it is called. You should watch it, especially if you live in what you think is “Farm Land”. It will change you concept of what that term means.

I grew up in the fruit belt of Michigan. The southwest corner of Michigan to be exact. I can remember going out into my Grandfathers corn field, and grabbing an ear and being able to eat it. Big business corn can’t be eaten that way. Commodity corn is what is grown now. Corn that is used for animal feed, and High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS to be succinct. And it is in everything.

There are many articles on the dangers of HFCS. Here is one that I won’t post in it’s entirety because I don’t want to put you to sleep. But realize, if you are eating a processed food, you are eating HFCS.

What the heck is it with Budweiser and lime? I am not getting it. Same with Miller and lime.

People are not to drink beer with fruit in it. Limes are for gin and tonic. Not beer.

If you have to put fruit in your beer, that pretty much means that the beer sucks. Big time.

If you need to do something to your beer to make more people drink it. Improve the taste.

Don’t put lime in your beer. Especially since it won’t be a real lime, it will be lime flavoring. Chemicals on top of chemicals. Blech.

Namaste.
