saltlife

Stolen from the Urban Dictionary:

“Originally a sticker on the back of cars used to denote a surfer, bodyboarder, or general beach bum whose life centered around the ocean or related beach going activities. Ever seen a 32 year old man whose primary activity was surfing and working on his tan? That person would have a salt life sticker.

Unfortunately the trend spread to senior citizens, wanna be hipsters, soccer moms, and other persons wishing to inform the world that yes, they too have visited the beach at some point in life and they have the sticker to prove it.

Dude: “Check out this wicked Salt Life sticker I just got for the back of my car!”

Me: “That’s really lame dude. My Grandma has one of those on the back of her wheelchair and aren’t you afraid of the ocean ever since you got raped by that dolphin?”

Dude: “I don’t want to talk about it.”

Since moving to North Carolina I feel more like this:

Today the Walker and  I spent the day in the salt air.  We attended the blessing of the fishing fleet in Sneads Ferry, and then went out to breakfast.  We had breakfast outside at a picnic table breathing in the salt air.  We are living no more than a mile from the ocean…less as a matter of fact.  The salt air is around us constantly.  A nice stead breeze off of the ocean is constantly in our faces.

This is the life, kids.

We spent the afternoon at a pig roast in Newport, NC.

Wandering about the populace, eating smoked pig and listening to live music.  What a way to have to spend a beautiful Saturday afternoon….temps int he 80’s, with that nice breeze off of the ocean keeping things cooled down.

After leaving the pigs and the folks chowing down on them we wandered back to Swansboro, where we stopped at a yarn shop the Walker loves.  While she perused the yarn, I went into a cigar shop right across the road, picked out a couple of nice sticks, fired one up and went to sit in the sun to wait for the Walker to finish.  Then, just to cap off the day, we got some coffee and sat by the water just to enjoy the view.  THIS is the salt life, my friends.

We may not be fishing, or snorkeling, or kayaking, or surfing…but we are living the salt life to be sure.  The laid back lifestyle that living around the ocean allows you.  Sun, sand, water, and good company.  You have got to try it at least one time in your life.

And as I type this on our patio with a glass of peach pie moonshine, and an Onyx cigar in the tray, I wish all of you a taste of the salt life.
