It was rainin’ hard in Frisco. I needed one more fare to make my night…..

“Taxi”, by Harry Chapin.

I started driving for Lyft last week. Having a number of smaller colleges, and a major university near us provides a large group of folks wanting a inexpensive way of getting around without having to worry about parking.

Which is a nice way of saying that a large group of drunken college students like a cheap, and easy method of transportation to use to get from home to the bars and then back home again without getting pulled over for a DUI.

I am happy to provide that. Easy money. Which is something that I have always liked.

It was raining last night as I was driving people around, and I got to thinking about Chapin’s song. It is about a man who had lofty dreams when he was younger. Dreams that didn’t materialize, and he drives people who seem to have it made. Of course the song wends it way to where the moral hides….not everyone has it made….those who seem the happiest, aren’t….etc, etc….

Some of the college kids have asked me how I like driving. I tell them that at my stage of life, it is awesome. I get to meet interesting people for short periods of time. The money is good. The work is easy. That I don’t have to worry about working my way up. I have been up, down, sideways. This is where I want to be.

Most of the guys don’t get it. It is interesting what the majority of the women do.

As the song says:

“I’ve got something inside me to drive a princess blind.

There’s a wild-man wizard hiding in me, illuminatin’ my mind.”

The world is a strange place when you get to that point where you take the time to just breathe and observe.
