I have owned Roxie since she was 6 mos. old. That was 12 years ago. And she has been a complete mystery from the day that she walked into the house.
Roxie was rescued from a local animal shelter. She was the product of divorce. The shelter was noisy as hell with all of the dogs barking and howling. Roxie huddled in the back of her cage, shivering….obviously terrified of the noise. The couple of times I went to see her before adopting her, I took her out for a walk in the grass just outside of the shelter. She was ecstatic to get out of the building and away from the noise. I fell in love with her. I paid my adoption fee, and she came home.
And you might think that life was golden from there. Not so much.
Roxie’s demeanor changed as soon as she walked in the door to the house. Barking at anything that made a noise, moved, or might at some time move. That was something that had to be worked on. We did the requisite walks, and taught her a few rudimentary commands. We chased the zombies out of the park that is behind the house, and the years moved on.
Both of us have aged a few years. And I don’t understand this hound anymore now than I did from the get go. She spends her days now mostly lying on a chaise snoring and farting. Expect when for no discernible reason what so ever she starts barking. It is as if she is in the midst of a dream, wakes herself up with her own snoring and, thinking that someone is playing a trick on her, starts barking like a band of zombies are breaking down the door.
And then looks around groggily, lays her head back down, grumps a bit and goes back to sleep.
This dog is a freak. I will never understand her.
