The Walker and I make dinner and sit at the table in the dining room every night for dinner. Rarely do we order out for dinner. Most times we are preparing our evening meal. This is a rare treat for me as for the past waytoomayyearstoeventhinkabout I have eaten in front of the television, sitting on the couch.
And the conversations…..ooohhh baby the conversations. Just tonight we were talking about a topic that came up a few months ago where I thought she was pulling my leg. The Walker was in England on assignment near Cambridge. She was in the pub where DNA was first discussed by James Watson, and Francis Crick. During the course of her time in the pub, one of her companions whipped out a small ironing board and started ironing.
I am hearing this story and I am thinking that she can’t for one minute think that I am going to believe this story. And then I googled it….
What the hell.
From Wikipedia:
“Extreme Ironing (also called EI) is an extreme sport and a performance art in which people take ironing boards to remote locations and iron items of clothing. According to the Extreme Ironing Bureau, extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.”[1]
Part of the attraction and interest the media has shown towards extreme ironing seems to centre on the issue of whether it is really a sport or not. It is widely considered to be tongue-in-cheek.[2]
Some locations where such performances have taken place include a mountainside of a difficultclimb; a forest; in a canoe; while skiing or snowboarding; on top of large bronze statues; in the middle of a street; underwater; in the middle of the M1 Motorway;[3] during a keirin race;[4]whilst parachuting;[5] and under the ice cover of a lake. The performances have been conducted solo or by groups.”
Again….what the hell…..

Not exactly along subject lines, but I mentored a young engineer many moons ago (a little Native American speak there) in the Gaylord, MI area. He is from Houston, a graduate of their fine program, and was in our “apprentice” program. He carried his personal iron with him on the road. Didn’t like hotel irons touching his clothes. Had razor-sharp creases in his jeans. I thought it was a little OCD (or CDO, to keep things in order!). He’d probably be a good candidate for “extreme ironing”.
He was promoted earlier this month to “Director of Sales, Midstream Processing”.
Maybe I should carry an iron with me?

Brian, it truly sounds like he is a definite candidate for extreme ironing….and I am surprised that you haven’t been a part of this madness….
