As The Walker and I wander about our daily business we hold hands. Seems to be a simple thing. Something that I learned as I was growing up. It goes along with holding, and opening doors for women. Courtesy. Simple bits of chivalry, if you will. And we are always amazed, and somewhat amused by the comments we get. And they all come from women. Women our mothers age, and older. Comments about how nice it is to see a couple holding hands. How you don’t see that any longer.
You have to wonder why. But then again, I look at my previous marriages where I didn’t model that behavior for my sons. Kids learn what they see their parents exhibit. If boys see their father showing common courtesy to their mother, they will most likely exhibit that in their own relationships. If girls see their fathers showing common courtesy, and their mother accepts it graciously then they will be looking for that in their relationships.
And the opposite is also true.
Common courtesy. The more you know, eh?

Hello Phil,
I’ve run across your blog while searching for images. Nice.
You’re writing is “easy-listening” and if the above is representative, insightful as well.
Good words about “holding hands” and modeling.
Do you know if photo you used is copyrighted?
It would go PERFECTLY on a CD cover I’m working on that includes a song called “One Common Hope” that I wrote to help with FLOOD RELIEF for our area (Northern MN)
Any help or direction you can give on this matter would be very much appreciated.
Thank you.
and….
I’m subscribing….
Good stuff.
🙂
