To paraphrase a Neil Young song way too many times over the years I have found myself “Sailing heart ships through broken harbors.”

Looking up at the sky asking, “Why?”

Why now?

Why this?

And of course, why me?

I have finally figured out that the word “why” is pretty meaningless. If you are getting to the end of any relationship be it work, or personal and find yourself asking “why”, this is indicative of a bigger problem with communication. It all comes down to communication with your partner, your boss, and with yourself. Open and honest information.

My shaking my fists at the heavens why screaming, “WHY?” has never resulted in a satisfactory response. If you are asking your partner why at the end of a relationship, all you are doing is setting yourself up for a list of your failings. Which, of course, puts you into a defensive position. So all asking “why?” has done is to put you right back into an argument.

Not so positive to be sure.

That being said, in this season of resolutions, I will be eliminating the asking of “why.” It has no meaning. What does have meaning will be my being as open and honest as I can in all of my relationships. People who deal with me both personally, and professionally deserve nothing less than knowing where I am coming from at any given time.

2016.

The year of I yam what I yam.
