Or is it just something that we are used to doing?

I have been making soup for the past week or so.  A lot of soup.

A lot of different types of soup.  Vegetable soup, chicken soup, butternut squash soup, and chili.

Now some of you might raise your hand and say that chili isn’t really a soup.

And depending on how much of a foodista you are, you are probably right.  Chili is thought of more as a stew, than a soup due to the way it is cooked.  Me, I cook it that way that I do soup so I consider it as such.  Disabuse me, if you must.

The soup that surprised me was the butternut squash soup.  I had never had it before.  I am not a food hipster, so when the air turned chill and people started losing their minds over pumpkin, and squash flavored drinks and foods I simply felt smug.  so what changed my mind?  A friend who talked long, and convincingly about the taste and the health benefit of squash.  So I figured what the heck.  If nothing else, I can use it as a base for something else.

The recipe I used was a very simple one….squash, onion, and chicken stock.  No cream, no salt and pepper, and no nutmeg.

It took me a couple of days to even try it.  I made it Saturday, and didn’t try it until Monday evening.  And I was surprised.  Had a great taste to it.  It reminded me of tomato soup in texture and taste.  As a matter of fact I just found a recipe for a butternut squash soup that has tomato in it for the next time I make this soup.  Though I think that I am going to make a chowder next.

Mmmmmmm chowder………
