Not everyone has heard of mead.  People who hang out at Renaissance Fairs will know what it is.  People who have read The Hobbit series by J.R.R. Tolkien will know it, but very few others.  Mead just isn’t as popular as other fermented drinks.

A shame, that is.  I started making mead close to 7 years ago.  It was a natural progression of my beer making.  I was looking for a higher ABV drink without learning how to make wine.  So I started looking around and found mead.

Mead is basically fermented honey.  You can add fruit or grains to it.  It can be made either as a carbonated, naturally sparkling, or still drink.  I made mine with blueberries, or strawberries, or peaches.  The ABV of a typical batch was around 15%.  Loved that.

Mead ferments just like ale does.  You add yeast to the mixture of honey and fruit in it, toss the whole mess into a carboy put a air lock on it and let is sit for a couple of weeks.  After that it is into the bottles, let them sit for a few weeks and enjoy.

Matter of fact, I am enjoying a blueberry mead that I made close to 3 months ago right now.

I have way too many superlatives to say about this mead.  Nice taste.  Nice alcohol bite.  I make some good mead.
