Survival of the fittest…..a phrase coined by British philosopher Herbert Spencer referring to Charles Darwins “On the Origins of Life.”
“This survival of the fittest, which I have here sought to express in mechanical terms, is that which Mr. Darwin has called ‘natural selection’, or the preservation of favoured races in the struggle for life.”
Humans need food, shelter, and water to survive. In our modern society where we are huddled in towns, villages, and cities those necessities could dry up if there ever came a apocalyptic event.
It isn’t like we don’t have a clear reference to an apocalyptic disaster. Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Sandy. Typhoon Haiyan.
In Katrina, and Sandy the looting that occurred wasn’t just of the food to survive kind. There was a whole bunch of take whatever you can get your hands on because we can right now. In the Philippines it was quiet the opposite…the looting was primarily for food, and water. Such a difference between us and the rest of the world, now isn’t there?
But it all begs the question of what would we all do if there was a cataclysmic situation? Would we try to cooperate to survive, or would we head for the nearest gun shop to load up on weapons and ammunition so that we could then be the big dog?
