private

The Great Debate continues:  What is Public, and What is Private?

You would think that this would be an easy.  And you would be wrong.  With the advent of sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Tumblr, and the like the line between public and private has been blurred.  At least somewhat.

I started out on Facecrack in 2007.   I started blogging shortly thereafter.  I knew right from the get go that there were certain things that I wasn’t going to be posting.  Unfortunately, my friends didn’t see things the same way and there were a couple of pictures that discussions were had to get them taken down.  Some folks don’t understand that.  And that is where the problems begin.  People say that it is the youngsters who don’t think about this most…I have found that every age group has blinders on when it comes to social media.

Suggestive photos, abusive rants, pictures of drunkeness, pictures of body parts.  You name it, people have posted it on their pages.  And some of those folks have gotten their noses out of joint when called on it.  Facebook has a gazillion users.  Unless you don’t share anything on your page, someone, somewhere is going to see what you have posted.  Employers.  Parents.  Spouses.  Friends.  People who are going to steal the pictures of our kids, holiday get togethers, etc. just to use them for their own purposes.

I have a couple of friends who are constantly telling me about the lack of security on the internet.  They talk about how google, and facebook are tracking our searches.  How companies, and the government are working their ways into our lives via our computers, and smartphones.

Reminds me of a book I read:

traveler

The Traveler is set in the near future where the world is run by governments, but a secret organization.  That organization keeps track of citizens through use of closed circuit cameras, RFID chips, credit card usage, loyalty card usage…you get the idea.  It is actually an interesting book to read.

But the book will beat into you that unless you live very specifically, there is no privacy.  Personal liberty and freedom is gone with the conveniences of our modern lives.

Sort of like posting you life on Facebook, eh?
